Common Thread began in 2021 when founder Mara Bell started sending a weekly email to twelve friends. She wanted a place for useful questions that did not fit neatly into technology, culture or lifestyle magazines. The first issue compared a public library repair desk with a neighborhood garden. It was scrappy, overlong and warmly received.
Today the project is an independent editorial journal about the connections hiding inside ordinary life. We cover science, craft, food, travel, cities and art, but our real subject is attention: what happens when people look closely and share what they learn.
Our mission
We make thoughtful knowledge approachable without flattening it. Our goal is to explain terms, show practical examples and leave room for uncertainty. We do not believe every story needs a grand solution. Sometimes a better question, a repaired object or a kinder public space is meaningful progress.

The small team
Mara Bell is founder and editor. Jonas Reed, our research editor, checks sources and asks inconvenient questions. Priya Shah shapes illustrations and information design. Tom Alvarez looks after accessibility, publishing and the occasional stubborn server.
A few numbers
Since launch, we have published 186 essays, worked with 42 guest contributors and reached readers in 31 countries. We have hosted 18 small reading circles and corrected 27 errors in public. That last number is not a joke: accuracy improves when editors are willing to be corrected.
